ENTRE RÍOS PROVINCE WILL ALSO HAVE TRIAL BY JURY

The governor of Entre Ríos, Gustavo Bordet, announced yesterday that he will present a trial by jury bill to the Legislature.

Governor Gustavo Bordet

“I am going to promote the debate to establish trial by jury in Entre Ríos. This initiative is part of the necessary reform of the Judiciary to which I have committed myself during my opening speech about the state of the Province in front of the two Houses of the Legislature and the society of Entre Ríos. It is about bringing justice to the citizenry. Common sense prevails and the political climate is favorable to start a reform of these features; but I insist, with the consensus of everybody”, stated the governor.

The governor took this crucial political decision after a meeting lasting several hours with the Bar Association of Entre Ríos, which took the lead in promoting trial by jury in that territory.

Professor Julio Federick, the author and soul of the project, summarizes its general guidelines: "The bill provides for a classic jury system of twelve people, a voir dire to select the impartial jury, a judge who will instruct the jury on the law, a final general verdict with no appeal for the prosecution, a unanimous verdict for life sentences and a super majority 10-2 verdict for the rest of the charges. The hung jury is also contemplated with the possibility of only one new trial. In sum, it is the same model of the jury that is being so successfully exercised in the neighboring province of Buenos Aires".

The AAJJ warmly congratulates the Government of Entre Ríos and the local Bar Association for this great news. Argentina should be proud of this initiative.

The AAJJ is ready to assist the People and Government of Entre Ríos in providing all the necessary support and dissemination and to make the essential contributions that will enrich the bill during the legislative debate.
